Terry Robb to perform at PAC; Concert set for Saturday in Newport
The Newport News Times, Mar 28, 2019
“Music artist Terry Robb, hailed as one of the finest finger-style blues guitarists on the international scene, is currently on tour to promote his newest project, “Confessin’ My Dues,” and he will be performing in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive St.
“Confessin’ My Dues” marks the second release from Robb on the Portland-based independent record label, NiaSounds, and his 15th solo recording. This new album will be available May 31 at online retailers and streaming services such as Amazon, Apple Music and Pandora. Limited edition advance release CDs will be available for purchase at his concert in Newport.
For “Confessin' My Dues,” Robb draws on his deep knowledge of Delta blues, ragtime and swing in 13 original compositions ranging from blistering instrumental blues and stunning ragtime fingerpicking to soulful singing, backed by a powerhouse rhythm section. Renowned jazz musicians Gary Hobbs and Dave Captein are featured on drums and upright bass throughout the album, and blues guitarist Adam Scramstad makes a guest appearance on electric rhythm guitar.
Drawing from the well of country blues to Coltrane, ragtime to Hendrix, Americana to American Primitivism, “Confessin’ My Dues” represents a lifetime of musical experiences and influences for Robb. “I wanted a modern take on familiar themes without leaving tradition behind,” he said. “I’ve been wanting to record with Gary and Dave for a long time. They are world class musicians, and I knew they would bring a fresh and unique approach to what I was after.”
Robb added, “Sonically, I wanted the album to be both intimate and powerful. I’m very excited to bring this group of musicians together for the first time.”
To capture that musical interplay, Robb turned to Dennis Carter, veteran sound engineer and owner of Falcon Recording Studios. Carter is a mainstay in the Pacific Northwest recording scene, and Robb’s longtime studio collaborator. Together they have produced countless recordings. With Carter among the recording credits, the album boasts three Oregon Music Hall of Fame inductees — Robb, Captein and Carter are members of the illustrious group of Oregon music industry all-stars.”
Tickets for Robb’s performance in Newport are $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the show. They can be purchased online at www.coastarts.org/events/2019/03/terry-robb-in-concert and at the PAC box office.
